Parts of JHB without water as system crashed – these areas are affected

Parts of Johannesburg will have NO water as the Johannesburg Waters Commando system levels have worsened from critically low to empty.

THESE PARTS OF JHB WILL BE WITHOUT WATER

Rand Water has cautioned that there will be no water for customers in areas serviced by the Hurstill reservoirs zone.

“Due to Rand Water’s uninterrupted load shifting from Eikenhof to recover the Palmiet system, Johannesburg Water’s Commando system levels have worsened from critically low to empty,”

the utility said in a statement.

THE FOLLOWING AREAS WILL BE AFFECTED:

• Montgomery Park
• Westbury
• Hursthill
• Greymont
• Coronationville
• Newlands
• Northcliff
• Newclare
• Auckland Park
• Albertville
• Newlands
• Melville
• Richmond
• Parkview
• Emmarentia
• Greenside.

However, both Helen Joseph and Rahima Moosa hospitals’ water supply will not be affected.

ALTERNATIVE WATER SUPPLY IS BEING PROVIDED – WATER AND MOBILE TANKERS

The water utility says an alternative water supply is being provided through stationary water tankers and mobile tankers in affected areas.

Rand Water has again urged consumers to report any leaks or water bursts in these areas as this may help the system recover.

The utility has also asked consumers to continue playing their part in conserving water.

CONSUMERS ARE URGED TO PLAY THEIR PART IN CONSERVING WATER

Residents are reminded to observe Stage 2 water restrictions and use water sparingly.

Joburg Water spokesperson Puleng Mopeli reportedly said reducing demand remains a key priority.

Meanwhile, an urgent meeting with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation is set for Monday for a plan forward.

TIPS FOR SURVIVING IN A WATER-SCARCE ENVIRONMENT:

• Fix leaky taps – even a slow drip can waste 30 litres a day
• Only use your dishwasher when its full and stop it before the drying cycle so it can air dry
• If you fill two sinks; one with soapy water and one with warm water for rinsing, this will use less water than a dishwasher
• Wash your clothes in cold water to save water and energy
• Sweep away leaves and debris rather than using a hose to spray them away
• Minimise how often you wash your car
• Put buckets in the shower for runoff water and underdrains to catch water during rain for your garden
• Plant a water-wise garden with indigenous drought-resistant plants
• Water your garden after 18:00
• Use a watering can to make sure the water goes where it’s needed
